He is a veteran competitive bodybuilder, having won state, national and international competitions in every age category—from Teenage to Over 50. (See Competition History) His competitive career has spanned almost four decades, and still continues today.
Doug is certainly knowledgeable in the areas of exercise physiology and sports nutrition, but his primary area of expertise is biomechanics—the physics of resistance exercise. He writes for several magazines, appears in numerous instructional videos, conducts seminars world-wide, and is often interviewed on radio programs and TV shows. In 1999 and 2000, he co-hosted a Spanish market fitness TV show called “Totalmente En Forma”, which was seen on ESPN-2, in numerous Latin American countries.
In 1984, Doug, then just 24, founded Brignole Fitness Training Club, a popular and upscale fitness center in Pasadena, California. The club began as a 10,400 square foot gym, and eventually grew into a 25,000 square foot facility. Staffed with over 50 full and part time employees, Brignole Fitness served over 7,000 members during its 11 years of business.
Over the past 40+ years, Doug has personally trained hundred of clients—men and women of all ages, having a wide variety of goals, conditions and starting points. His list of past and present clients includes people in the film industry, former government officials, heads of corporations, competitive athletes, senior citizens, people with handicaps, and more. Whether the goal is weight loss, bodybuilding, rehabilitation, sports conditioning, simply optimum health, Doug is able to custom tailor a program to the specific needs of each client.
In addition to training lay clients, Doug also trains trainers. He has been approved by The American Council on Exercise (ACE) as a “Continuing Education Provider”, thereby allowing him to issue “Continuing Education Credits” (CECs) to Certified Personal Trainers, which enables them to maintain their certification.
In 2011, Doug co-authored Million Dollar Muscle, an academic book for sociology students. In this book, Doug and Adrian James Tan, PhD examine the fitness industry from a historical and sociological perspective. Brignole is currently working on his second book, which will be about biomechanics, and will be meant for students of Exercise Science, as well as Athletic Coaches, Personal Trainers, bodybuilders and fitness devotees.
Doug is an ambassador of fitness. His entire life has been devoted to it, and he is a shining example of someone who lives and breathes the fitness lifestyle. His knowledge, communication skills and enthusiasm are like a beacon for anyone wanting to find their way through the fog of the often-confusing world of fitness.
